The use of kinetic and kinematic data for the teaching of postural biomechanics

Abstract— A field of interest in Biomedical Engineering and Bioengineering is the study of Postural Biomechanics, based on the relationships between the geometric and kinetic characteristics of body segments in typical postures of the human body. Particularly the study of standing can be achieved by recording signals corresponding to the oscillations at the level of the head or feet -generated during this posture-, whose analysis constitutes a diagnostic tool for the specialist in balance disorders, of vestibular or central origin. This work exposes the approach to the contents on Postural Biomechanics developed in the “Biomechanics” subject, corresponding to the 5th semester of the Bioengineering career, at the National University of San Juan. Under the modality called Resolution of Engineering Problems for Biomedical Engineering and Bioengineering careers, theoretical foundations -which are articulated horizontally and vertically with other contents of the career- are integrated with practical activities. The methodology used in this teaching-learning process on Postural Biomechanics is described, and the importance of training competencies in the students is analyzed, allowing them to address Professional Activities reserved for the Biomedical Engineer and Bioengineer Degree related to this subject, as regulates Resolution N° 1603-04 of the Ministry of Education, in Argentine.
